Fist you go to the Wang hill near to the city. On the hilltop you visit an old summer-palace of King Rama 4th and the scenic park.

After that you head for the famous Mahatat temple in Petchaburi, a remarkable monument of the centuries old Khmer architecture, an important spiritual center of Buddhism in Thailand till today. In front of the temple you can admire traditional Thai dances, too.

The next destination is Khao Luang (royal mountain), situated about 4 km outside the city.

There you enter an extended natural cave.  Its several cavern are filled with rows of buddha-images in-cluding a remarkable large recli-ning statue. Its particular impressing at noon, when the sunlight floods into the dome-shaped central cave. Another 15 minutes ride passes through rustic villages and bright green paddy fields. Finally you reach a large coconut plan-tation and new tourist territory. Inside this ‘jungle like plantation lives a German expatriate and raises fish with his Thai family. You have lunch on the veranda of a wooden Thai-house.

After lunch a short boat-trip starts in front of the house. The narrow tributary with its lush tropical vegetation flows soon afterwards into the wider Petchaburi-River.

The small fishing-boat passes along old wooden Thai-style-houses, along orchards, tropical gardens, palm trees and mangroves. It heads for the impressive Wat Khao (temple on the hill). Though famous in Thailand, its barely explored by western tourists. The hilltop provides fine views of the surrounding countryside. Back at the farm you visit the fish-pond, accompanied by the farmer.

Wir fahren zunächst zum Kao Wang Berg, der Petchaburi überragt. Dort besichtigen wir den alten Sommer-palast von König Rama IV. und die reizvolle Parkanlage.

Nahe beim zentralen Markt der Stadt sehen wir den Mahathat Tempel, ein imponierendes Denkmal aus der Jahrhundert alten Khmer-Periode, auch heute noch ein geistiges Zentrum des thailän-dischen Buddhismus. Dort können wir auch traditionelle Tempeltänze Bewundern.

Etwas ausserhalb der Stadt liegt die weitläufige Natursteinhöhle Khao Luang, die zahlreiche Buddha-statuen beherbergt. Besonders reizvoll ist es, wenn zur Mittagszeit die Sonne in die kuppelartige Haupthöhle flutet.Eine weitere 15 Minuten Tour an leuchtend grünen Reisfeldern und kleinen An-siedlungen entlang führt uns zu einer ausgedehnten Kokospalmen-plantage und in touristisches Neuland.

Mitten in dieser Plantage wohnt ein Deutscher mit seiner thailändischen Grossfamilie. Auf der Veranda des Thai-Holzhauses nehmen wir ein Mittagessen ein.

Hieran schliesst sich eine kurze Tour mit einem kleinen Boot an. Der schmale Flusslauf mit seiner üppig tropischen Vegetation öffnet sich nach wenigen Hundert Metern zum Petchaburi Fluss, auf dem wir einige Kilometer an alten Holzhäusern, Obstgärten, Palmen und Mangroven entlang gleiten.Ziel ist die eindrucksvolle Tempelanlage Wat Khao (Tempel auf dem Hügel), die von westlichem Tourismus gänzlich unberührt ist. Vom Hügel aus geniessen wir einen schönen Überblick über die Landschaft. Danach geht es mit dem Boot zurück und wir werden unter sachkundiger Begleitung über die Farm geführt. Dann geht es zurück nach Hua Hin, wo wir gegen 17 Uhr wieder eintreffen.
